I've often been pleasantly surprised by the number of local talent that seems to have arisen from the Lafayette/West Lafayette area. The other night however, it was the level of talent from one individual that was the surprise.
Not in a long while, have I experienced as solid a musical delivery as provided by Rossville, Indiana native Joel Brovont. He delivered a powerful set that was not only musically superior; but an unmistakable tribute to the power of God in his life. Complete with powerfully static imagery by songs such as ‘Proven.’
His testimony underscores an inspiration for most of his lyrics, but it was his wife who took the stage to complement that testimony with the story behind their marriage, and long-time friendship. See more on his bio.
That union added even more imagery to the rest of the set. Pausing often to refer to scripture, there was no room for ambiguity in his lyrics or performance. Joel prompted a tear from me several times, as his upbeat style and clear message struck me as a committed child of God, delivering blessings in the form of song.
Impassioned but light-hearted, the entire set was brilliant by any musical standard. My personal favorite however, was near the end. Crisp bridge, and intelligent lyrics made "I Was, I Am" the capstone to the evening. Joel also delivered a parody, and a song dedicated to the modern notion that our Savior is indeed, a pretty cool guy.
Jesus is cool!
